Correct irrigation is not simply a number of minutes on a controller. Soil, planting, slope, emitter type, flow and weather must work together; copied schedules can create dry spots and water waste at the same time.

Why early morning often works well

Before strong sun, evaporation is generally lower and wind is calmer. More water reaches the soil, plants enter the hot part of the day in better condition and faults can be noticed during daylight.

Very late watering can leave foliage wet for long periods on some plants. The final start time should reflect local noise limits, pressure, plant type and disease risk.

Think in applied water, not minutes alone

A spray, rotor and drip line running for the same number of minutes will not deliver the same amount. Nozzle flow, spacing, pressure and zone size all change the application rate.

A simple catch-cup test compares water collected across a zone. Large differences should lead to a coverage and pressure check before the schedule is extended.

Group zones by plant and exposure

Sunny turf, shaded shrubs and containers should not share the same schedule when their demand and equipment differ. Group areas with similar needs and emission types where possible.

Drip systems depend on filtration, pressure regulation and emitter spacing. A line that appears to run can still leave part of a bed dry because of blocked outlets.

Use cycle-and-soak on slow soil and slopes

Clay or compacted soil absorbs slowly, while a long single run on a slope can create runoff. Short cycles separated by soak time allow more water to enter the soil.

Sandy soil drains faster but may retain moisture for less time. Confirm any schedule in the field using root depth and moisture rather than soil name alone.

Adjust with weather instead of a fixed calendar

A spring programme may be insufficient in midsummer and excessive in autumn. Change days or duration gradually in response to temperature, rainfall, wind and plant growth.

Test rain sensors, weather links and seasonal-percentage functions. A connected sensor should not be assumed to make the right decision under every site condition.

Repair mechanical faults before changing the programme

A broken head, leaking valve, buried nozzle, spray aimed at paving or low pressure cannot be solved by adding minutes. Observe dry areas, misting, pooling and runoff while each zone operates.

Unexpected meter or pump behaviour can indicate a hidden leak. Continuing flow when zones are off deserves further investigation.

Observe root depth and plant response

Constant shallow watering can keep roots near the surface. The goal is a measured application that reaches the active root zone without exceeding the soil's intake capacity.

Wilting is not always drought; excess water and low root oxygen can look similar. Check moisture below the surface before deciding to irrigate more.

A short monthly inspection saves water

Review head direction, filters, emitters, valve boxes and the controller. As plants grow, they can block a head that previously had clear coverage.

Record schedule changes with dates and weather conditions. This creates a useful seasonal history instead of rebuilding the programme from memory each year.
